Submissions Guidelines

If you want to write for us:

Writing Style: We love a good angle, in fact we insist on it. Don’t tell us about the new doctor in town. Discuss a relevant medical issue facing Utah South and use the new doctor as one of your sources or tell us about the doctor’s special research with other local doctors or his long term volunteering efforts. The better the angle, the more likely we are to accept your article.

We want inquisitive, engaging and unique writing voices. We don’t enjoy boring here. That said, we do want you to use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation and we use the Associated Press stylebook as our guide.

We suggest you query your idea for feature articles before you send the entire piece. We are idea people here and we will be able to see your vision if you give us a good summary of your idea.

Submitted articles should be formatted with single spaces within the paragraph, double spaces between paragraphs and no paragraph indentations. We will accept attachments in word documents or in the body of the e-mail.

We do not accept libelous, pornographic, sexually suggestive, or vulgar material.

Submitted photos should be in jpeg format and of good quality. We prefer you send photos you took yourself; otherwise we need written permission from the photographer if you are submitting for someone else.

Artwork: If you are submitting artwork for our weekly amateur artist section or a comic for our humor section, please do not send us the original work of art. We will accept copies by snail mail or scanned images via email.

Payment: We want to pay you but right now we are working for free ourselves. Once we start to get paid we promise we will pay you. For now, you will get a byline and a short bio.
Sections:

LIVE:
Feature: We accept ideas and queries for feature articles and will make assignments based on writing experience and style.

From The Porch: In our winter months we will be featuring a front porch or door or even indoor vignette of a local homeowner. During the spring and summer we will feature a yard of a local homeowner. We are always looking for ideas for this section. We especially want to see some of our neighbors’ homes and yards outside Cedar City and Enoch. Email the editor with any great finds.

Home Care Tip: We are currently looking for a home care diva or handyman to write a short 100 word tip for home cleaning or repair.

Parenting Column: We will consider columns or editorials on any parenting topic.

EAT SECTION: If you are a foodie and a writer we would love to hear your ideas for a feature article. We do like our food article to be both relevant to the season and the area.

Local Recipes: Fill out our recipe form to include your favorite recipe on our local recipe pages.

Food Blog: Do you blog about food? Are you from Southern Utah? We would love to feature your blog on the site. Email the editor with your site address.

APPLAUD
Feature: If you are an entertainment junkie, query us with your article idea.

Interview: Do you know an artist, musician, actor or entertainer that is deserving of an interview? Let us know. Interview assignments are made based on writing experience.

PODCASTS: We love to upload podcasts of local entertainment events on the site.

Featured Amateur Artists: We will feature a work of art from an amateur artist age 10 or older. To be considered please email us an image of your work art@aliveutah.com. Include the work title, medium, and your email.

DISCUSS
Our Discuss section is our most interactive portion of the site. We welcome comments from the community. Once you register for a free account you can comment in any of the forums, upload a classified ad or comment on any article.

Feature: We are always looking for discussion worthy topics. We would love to see your ideas. Email the editor at editor@aliveutah.com

Book Reviews: We review books that are relevant to our area. If you have a book you would like to propose for a review you may send your idea or your review to editor@aliveutah.com You may also discuss any of your favorite reads in our book group forum.

EXPLORE:
Feature: Query us with your outdoor explore or outdoor play story ideas.

Hunter’s Corner: We are currently looking for a few experienced hunters who are also skilled with the pen. If you are a hunter/writer we want to hear from you.

WORK
Feature: Finance, technology, job interviewing, marketing ideas, -- the list of topics is endless. Send us your ideas. However, we do not run self promotional articles. We appreciate an expert’s point of view but articles should not be written with the intention to sell your product. We have lovely ad space for sale for that.

Ask A Nerd: We have extremely experienced professionals answering the technology and computer questions in this column. We do welcome questions for this section.

VITALIZE
We cover healthy living, medical and fitness topics in this section. We welcome story ideas and queries dealing with these topics.

Fit Tip: We are currently looking for a few fitness experts to supply us with 100 word fitness tips.

GIGGLE: We love a good laugh here.
Feature: Send us your full manuscript to be considered for publication
Comics: We are looking for comics by local youth and adults. Email your comic submissions to art@aliveutah.com
Funny Fotos: Send your funny photo of a local resident or event to the editor.

Campus Life
Campus life is a column and will include updates about Southern Utah University or any of the regional high schools.
